In partnership with the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA), the HEA have just opened a call for institutions to submit applications for funding to projects which support the theme of internationalisation.

Grants of up to £10,000 are available for successful projects which:

- enhance the teaching and learning experiences both for international students studying in the UK and home students in the context of internationalisation;

- promote intercultural understanding to prepare students for employment in a global context.

I am writing to inform you that the European Commission has launched its latest call for proposals under what is known as the 7th EU Research and Technological Framework Programme 2007 - 2013, between known by the acronym FP7.

The call for proposals under this prorgamme that was published on July 19th last supports research in a range of different areas including in the fields of agriculture, food, fisheries, biotechnology, nano-technology, environmental sciences, climate change issues, health, transport , security and space.

Organisations from research, educational and private sector companies can participate within these funding programmes. There must be a minimum of three partners participating within any of these specific programmes to be successful.

I would urge your university or research centre to look very carefully at this latest calls for proposals.

HEA UK travel fund

The HEA’s new UK travel fund will enable staff and students in UK higher education to exchange and disseminate good practice in learning, teaching and assessment and engage with their peers. The funding may be used to help the applicant(s) attend conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run in the UK. Please note that funding may not be used for events that are being held outside the UK. The application should demonstrate that:

 

• the event is related to at least one of the HEA’s current seven priority themes: assessment, education for sustainable development, employability, internationalisation, flexible learning, retention and success, reward and recognition of teaching;

 

• the activity would have a positive impact in the sector e.g. including the nature of the engagement proposed by the applicant, scope and purpose of the event;

 

• the event would give opportunities for professional development or capacity building for the applicant(s);

 

• the application should offer value for money.

FW: HEA Departmental Teaching Development Grants - Call for Reviewers

The Higher Education Academy has an open call for Departmental bids in the second phase of its Teaching Development Grant scheme to stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact.

A total of Ł300,000 of funding will be available for projects seeking a maximum award of Ł30,000. Successful bids will demonstrate team impact across the department, longitudinal impact and will include evaluation and dissemination criteria.

The themes for this round of funding are:

Employability and Internationalisation.

Closing date for Departmental bids is October 23rd 2011.

FW: Higher Education Academy funding news - Teaching Develpoment Grants

Teaching Development Grants

The Higher Education Academy is offering bid-based development grant funding to stimulate evidence-based research and encourage innovations in learning and teaching that have the potential for sector-wide impact.

Over the next year there will be a total of £1.5 million of funding available for individual grants, departmental grants and collaborative grants.

Phase One

The first phase begins with an open call for individual grant scheme bids. There is a total of £315,000 available in this phase with a maximum of £7,000 per project.
£28,000 is ring fenced for new academic staff (anyone with less than five years experience in a full time permanent post). A further £28,000 is ring fenced for HEA Fellows who have never had a teaching development grant before.

Bids are invited from anyone responsible for the student learning experience who is working in higher education institutions in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland or England that subscribe to the Higher Education Academy. The themes for this call are:
- internationalisation
- employability.

Closing date for phase one bids is 15 June 2011.

All bids will be reviewed by two independent peer reviewers and graded against the underlying principles below.
- Student engagement - e.g. developing resources with or for students, students involved with reviewing outputs use.
- Benefit of output beyond own HEI.

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers but with a proven record of research. It is anticipated that a Fellowship will lead to a more permanent academic position. Applications are welcomed in any discipline, and approximately 70 Fellowships will be available in 2011.

 

Applications are invited from those with a doctorate who had their doctoral viva not more than 5 years from the application closing date. Hence those who had their viva before 10 March 2006 are not eligible unless they have since had a career break.

 

Applications must be submitted online by the closing date of 4.00pm on 10 March 2011.

The Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies welcomes bids of up to £3,000 for pedagogic research or materials development projects in languages, linguistics and area studies. The remit of LLAS is to support teaching and learning of languages, linguistics and area studies in UK higher education.

These guidelines have been produced to help potential bidders decide whether or not their proposed project is likely to be considered. Proposals are welcome in any aspect of teaching and learning in languages, linguistics or area studies, but the following themes have been identified as priority areas.

* Language/area studies projects relating to specific languages/regions - we would particularly welcome bids from the following languages/area studies: Africa, the Americas, South East Asia (e.g. Indonesia, Malaysia etc), South Asia (e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan etc)
* Student experience in linguistics including employability
* Interdisciplinarity within LLAS subjects and with other disciplines (e.g. the linguistics of foreign languages, languages and area studies for business)
* The foreign language needs of Postgraduate graduates students in non-language disciplines (including linguistics and area studies where applicable)
* Teacher training in less widely taught languages
* British Sign Language

FW: UK Centre for Bioscience: Funding available

The UK Centre for Bioscience is currently accepting bids for our Departmental
Teaching Enhancement Scheme which offers up to £15,000 to bioscience
schools and departments to develop and implement some aspect of practice
that will lead to an improved learning experience for their students. Deadline
for expressions of interest: January 15th 2010. Deadline for full proposal: 7th
April 2010.

In addition we are currently holding round 12 of our Teaching Development
Fund which provides support of up to £4000 to individuals to encourage the
development, establishment or validation of innovative learning, teaching and
assessment materials or methods. Application deadline: 29th January 2010.

Both calls are open to those working in Higher Education Bisocience Teaching
and Learning in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.

FW: ADM-HEA Project Funding Announcement

The Art Design Media Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) is pleased to invite funding proposals for projects of 12 months duration, which will run from March 2010 to March 2011. There are three key themes for applications this year, which align with ADM-HEA’s current strategy:
 
Education for sustainable development
This strand aims to assist the development of curricula and pedagogy that will provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to live and work sustainably.
 
Student engagement
Relates to ways in which the sector involves learners in all aspects of their higher education experience at course, department and institutional level. These activities range from student involvement in curriculum design and assessment, through to contributions to departmental and institutional policy through membership of faculty boards, engagement in institutional quality processes and involvement in university and college governing bodies.
 
Quality enhancement and student assessment
In our disciplinary area, this strand may relate, in particular, to issues emerging from and responses to, the National Student Survey (NSS) data. Equally, it could examine ways that courses, departments and institutions collect information on the student learning experience and use this to effect change and enhance quality. We are also keen to encourage work that explores student assessment in art, design and media and the feedback available to students to enhance their learning experiences.

The Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies is pleased to invite proposals for our latest round of project funding.

Applications are welcomed for the funding of projects designed to:

• encourage a culture in which innovative developments in learning, teaching and assessment are valued and acknowledged at a national level;

JISC Grant Funding Call 03/09: Rapid Innovation Grants

JISC invites institutions to submit funding proposals for grants to fund technical rapid innovation projects addressing priority areas.

Proposals are sought under the following priority areas:

• Mashups of open data
• Aggregating tags and feeds
• Semantic web/ linked data
• Data search
• Visualisation
• Personalisation
• Mobile Technologies
• Lightweight Shared Infrastructure Services
• User Interface Design 

Funding of between £15,000 - £40,000 for 6 month projects for up to 30 projects is available

The deadline for receipt of proposals in response to this call is 12 noon on Wednesday 22 April 2009. 

Eligibility

Proposals may be submitted by HE institutions funded via HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW and DEL Northern Ireland, and by FE institutions funded via SFC, DCELLS Wales and DEL Northern Ireland. FE institutions in England that teach HE to more than 400 FTEs are also eligible to bid provided proposals demonstrate how the work supports the HE in FE agenda. 

Funding is available for projects starting in early-mid June 2009 for 6 months. All projects must  be complete by 30 November 2009.

RE: JISC / Higher Education Academy Open Education Resource Programme

The above programme has put out a call for bids of up to £250k to fund the release of educational resources in an “open way”.  Such bids have to be led by Subject Centres, but are expected to be consortia of a number of departments.  If you would be interested in being part of such a consortium in the area of Maths, Stats and OR please can you indicate your interest by sending the information requested below to Janet Nuttall (j.nuttall@bham.ac.uk) by Friday 6^th February (apologies for the short timescale, but the whole bidding process is very short).

You should be aware of a number of key facts relating to this call:

1  The overall project objective is the release of material equivalent to approximately 360 credits of pre-existing learning resources.

2  The project will not fund the development of new teaching materials .

3  All materials must be free at the point of use (released from all IPR and licensing considerations).

4  The material must be available for amendment and re-purposing without restriction.

If you are interested in being part of a consortium, please take a few minutes to provide us with the following information relating to those materials you have available;

- Associated licensing restrictions if currently known

JISC invites institutions to submit funding proposals for projects to undertake work under the third round of its Learning and Teaching Innovation Grants Programme.

 

JISC wishes to fund one year projects and activities that fit with the vision, outcomes and principles of the JISC e-Learning programme and support innovative approaches to learning and teaching. This is an open call, and projects dealing with any aspect of e-learning are welcomed. To reduce the initial investment in time and resource needed to develop a traditional JISC proposal and to encourage speculative and innovative ideas from the community bidders are invited to submit outline proposals online.

 

Funds of up to £75,000 for projects of one year duration are available. JISC has committed at least £500,000 for this activity during the three planned years of this programme.

 

Please note: The lead institution may only submit one proposal per assessment point.

 

The next deadline for submissions is likely to be January 12th 2009.  Further information will be available as soon as possible.
